Mar 31, 2009 I have the opportunity to purchase a Marlin 1894, 44 Magnum, no checkering, serial number 201979XX.

Marlin year of manufacture maybe determined from the following list of letter/numeral prefixs to the serial number: 1946-C 1947-D 1948-E 1949-F 1950-G 1951-H 1952-J 1953-K 1954-L 1955-M 1956-N 1957-P 1958-R 1959-S 1960-T 1961-U 1962-V 1963-W 1964-Y,-Z 1965-AA 1966-AB 1967-AC 1968-AD, -68 19-70 19-72 Starting in 1973, the year of manufacture maybe determined by subtracting the first two digits of the serial number from 100: Example: SN 2512345 would have been made in 1975 [100 - 25 = 75]. When a Model 39a has a 'B' Sn prefix, it was made 1940-41, before production halted during WWII.

When the 1st two numbers of a Marlin SN is '00', '99', '98', etc - subtract the 2-digit number from 2100 to get the DOM year. Snaphead: Don't presume your rifle is a Model 39a - If your rifle has/had a CCH receiver and/or an octagon bbl, it could be an earlier Model 39 (made from 1922 - 1939), and not a later Model 39a (which were so marked on the bbl). With the 1897 patent date, it can also be a Model 97 (aka: Model 1897) - if so, it would have been made in the very early 1900's, since SN 400,000 came in about 1908-09. They all look alike, to someone not very familiar with Marlin RF leverguns. Unless the 'peep hole sight' is a tang peep sight that the tangs were prepped for (D/T), then it has lost much of it's collector's value due to the aftermarket D/T for the sight. (receiver peep sight prep didn't start until the early 1950's IIRC.. The rifle hasn't changed in the 46 years I've had it, so I'm guessing the sights are original.

I'm having difficulty ejecting spent shells, the finger level slips off the bolt and so the shell sticks. I'm trying to get parts online so hence need to know type of rifle. Dollar value of the rifle is not important, my Grandfather taught my father to shoot with it who then taught me and I now want to teach my daughter to shoot with it! Norma Uni En Iso 19011 Pdf Free. My Grandfather was Finnish and the story goes he used it to shoot Russians with it and was wounded in a shootout in a grave yard!!

I know he did fight the Russians in the war of independence however am surprised he used a 22 calibre rifle, seems a little far fetched.

What Halwg listed works fine from about 1973 to 2008. The 91 series in 2009 was continued on through 2010 and in the first Ilion NY production. Sometime late last year Remington ran out of North Haven built recievers and they started using a serial number that starts with MR. The best way to tell if a gun was made in North Haven or Ilion, look at the proofmark on the side of the barrel just forward of the reciever. JM on the left, built by Marlin. REP on the right side and it was built by Remington.

Hope this helps.
